1. Growing up, what was your favorite thing about your birthday?

It was fairly soon after Christmas, so I often got the "it" toy that had been impossible to get two weeks earlier, and on sale.

2. What was the best present you've ever received?

Alice was the best belated birthday present (two weeks later) that I could possibly wish for, but in terms of tangible items, I think it might be the gorgeous Egyptian-style lapis and gold necklace Jason gave me on my 32nd birthday, the day we visited King Tut's tomb, both for the beauty of it and the memories attached.

3. What kind of cake did you usually have at your party?

White or yellow cake from a mix. My mother, while an excellent cook, was very much enamored with the convenience of modern prepared foods and mixes.

4. Did you have 2 separate parties: one for family, one for friends?

No. There was usually a pizza party with my closest friends (my mother's version of pizza is a whole 'nother story) and I don't really remember a special family thing. Starting when I was twelve I turned it into taking a carload of my friends to the movies and out to dinner someplace casual.

5. Do you still have birthday parties?

In the past I sometimes have. The most spectacular one was the time I rented out the local library (it's gorgeous) for my 40th birthday and had a huge cinnamon cheesecake and about a hundred friends and family. But usually by the time my birthday rolls around I'm ready for a break from parties and just go out to a particularly special dinner or to a show or something like that. One of my favorite things is when Jason makes the plan for my birthday--that's a huge treat.
