Subject:Friday Five -- June 15, 2007

This week's questions were suggested by dhpdesign.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?
I guess. I only listen to artists that I have heard before or from a friend or something. I'm not really one to try something new, and I don't actually know anything about music genres.

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
Unfortunately. :( *ahem* I mean, we are talking legal downloads, of course. ;)

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?
Yep. I always support the artists that I like by paying for their stuff.

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?
Radio, computer, and ipod. So three.

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?
Nope. I never listened to music back when they used cassette tapes.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?
Oldies, but that's about it other than the popular genres

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
John Mayer because each of his albums I like about half of his songs on each CD.

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?
Yes

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?
Discman, Stereo, Radio, Computer (4)

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?
I have a lot of cassette tapes, fortunately I still have a stereo that plays them. My mom has a massive collection of 9 tracks and she also gave me a huge box of vinyl, but I don't have a turntable or 8 track player.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?
90% of what I download is from none of the above genres - at least not in "the West". I like world music and more obscure stuff.

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
Not really. I'm all over the place songwise and if I like someone, I am likely to purchase the whole album to support them.

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?
Yes.

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?
Radio/cassette, 2 stereos/cdplayers, computer, laptop, boombox, iPod.

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?
I still have about 50 cassette tapes laying around that I can play on the older of my 2 stereos and pop into the boombox too. I rarely do but some of these tapes have sentimental value.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country? Well, since I don't really listen to mainstream genres...

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
I can think of a number, but most of them either post their work on their own websites for free, what I downloaded is not available on albums, or the artists have been dead long enough their work is public domain (ie Caruso)

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album? I bought the album Blue by Third Eye Blind after a friend burned it for me...that's all I can think of.

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)? Lots.

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape? I have vinyl and cassettes that belonged to my parents. I don't play them, but I still have them.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?
Well, I've been in a bit of an Irish-indie-music phase lately, so none of those are in any of the popular charts. And I've been strangely into Mendelssohn lately.

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
The Frames. I have quite a few gigabytes worth of stuff, but only 2 real albums - probably because they're insanely expensive (sold as imports (from Ireland) in Canadian music stores)

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?
Yes, but usually that was my plan all along. So, I downloaded a leak and then bought the album when it came out anyways - e.g. Damien Rice's 9 and the Once Soundtrack.

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?
Stereo system, laptop, discman, iPod nano, mp3 player in my mom's car

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?
Have a few cassette's from way back when I was younger - I think I have Kylie Minogue's very first release on a cassette. I was 6 and in love with The Loco-Motion :)

I do.

2.Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amountof their material yet own few or none of their albums?

Nope. Most of my downloads I own in some other form... or have bought after checking them out to see if I like... and if I don't like I don't keep the download.

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?

Well yeah... isn't that what I just said? Silly me.... I seem to be getting ahead of the game. *oops*

4.How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?

All of the above actually.... I've even got a working 8-track player in the house still.

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?

Have yes... all of these.... but I prefer to listen to my music either from my computer if I'm home... or my iPod when I'm out in the car. I do have a very nice system in my livingroom.... but since my home is invaded by one family member or another almost 24/7 it just kinda got phased out of my listening options.
